There’s something so satisfying about the wrinkles found in the folds of waxed canvas. The fabric holds on to and shows each moment of touch and use. Softening and wearing with age - the canvas grows rich with character…

…similar to us humans.

Meet the Maker

“The land is the real teacher. All we need as students is mindfulness.” - Robin Wall Kimmerer

Raised in rural New Jersey, Kara McGrane is no stranger to the beauty that can be found while enjoying time outdoors. Since moving to Missoula, MT in 2012 - she has immersed herself in the mountains, rivers, and canyons. Drawn to rich and warm colors, she tries to connect a bit of natural beauty in to each item she creates.

Kara received a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts (Drawing), from The University of Montana. She is pursuing her small business, New Old Friend, full-time. In addition to sewing, McGrane also creates custom watercolor pet portraits (@companion.portraits).

When not creating, Kara likes to be outside on a hiking trail with her dogs (Maple and Dolina), or mountain biking with her husband (Ian).

“With sewing, every time I make something I feel like I’m learning. Life can be overwhelming at times, and when you have something that is composed with a clear A, B, C, D order - the process can be refreshing. It’s nice to have that structure, especially when it is challenging to find elsewhere.”
